On the 23rd of November the School launches Kyiv Legal Empowerment Practical Programme (Kyiv LEPP) – innovations’ incubator in the field of A2J. This year we look at the innovations through the ‘role of (non)lawyers in inclusive access to justice ecosystem’

It was extremely difficult to choose the finalists in the competition. Semifinals gathered 9 teams of innovators from different countries. Each team offered a practical solution in the field of A2J in their country.

We pay attention to the fact that activists in the field of access to justice globally are generally concerned with similar problems. In Kyiv LEPP competition those concerns were: the specialization of paralegals / legal aid providers and the digitalization of legal aid.

Key criteria in the selection of the teams were the authority of the group members to make strategic decisions on the problem, institutional and intersectoral balance of the personal composition of the group, and awareness of team members about the relevance of the problem, and previous experience of solving.

To take part in Kyiv LEPP teams have passed through a set of selection stages: team application, individual applications, online interview with the selection committee.

5 teams have successfully passed all of the stages:

  • North Macedonian team, who will develop the model of mobile legal aid offices for remote communities,
  • team from Kenya, who will develop their Alternative Dispute Resolution web-platform,
  • team Poland-Ukraine, who will design the communication web-platform for students, teachers, and clients of legal clinics in both countries,
  • team from Kyrgyzstan, who will work on the sustainable development of paralegals network,
  • team of North Macedonia, who will work to support Roma community, to develop the solution to prevent blocking of social accounts.
